There are a ton of tips out there about hair care and this is, yes, another set of tips. Many of these just bear repeating though – sort of like the way you need to tell your husband every Tuesday that tomorrow is “trash day”, they just need to be brought back to your attention every once in a while.
Most of these are directly from our favorite stylist, Kristty Mikelonis, over at ClaytonHairSalon.com in Clayton NC. She provides everything from a standard haircut for men or women to more extensive haircolor services and even multicolor highlighting. She’s been doing hair for over 20 years and knows about hair. If you’re in the Clayton NC area and would like to see just how awesome YOUR hair can be, contact Clayton Hair Salon or learn more about them at hair salons Clayton NC.
Curly Hair?
People with curly hair should absolutely avoid using smoothing brushes and other brushes that have dense, fine bristles. You should use a wide-tooth comb for any combing. However, you should take care to use a heavy detangler before attempting to comb out knots and other tangles, as curly hair is susceptible to breakage. Use a soft brush made out of animal hairs instead of plastic. Do not brush your hair when it is wet and always be gentle. You should start at the end of your hair and work your way up as you gently untangle all the knots. Make sure you take your time!
Blow Drying – Friend or Foe to YOUR hair?
When you blow dry your hair, you can damage it. If you are bent on using a blowdryer for whatever reason, use a towel to dry your hair, as much as possible, before blow drying. The best method of blowdrying your hair is to keep the dryer on the cool air setting. Keep the dryer moving around, so it is not in a certain spot for too long. While you are drying your hair, untangle any knots using your fingers. If you can, avoid using the blow dryer altogether to dry your hair. The best way to dry your hair is to allow it to air dry naturally. If you must use your blow dryer, be sure to only use it on its coolest setting possible. Do not keep it in the same area of hair for more than a few seconds. Keep it moving as much as possible.
Conditioning 101
To get the best looking hair possible, consider using a leave-in conditioner. These conditioners give you the amazing effects that you typically associate with normal conditioner, but the effects last all day long! You’ll find leave-in conditioners at your local drug store or salon, in either, lotion or spray-on form. Check out some reviews over at TotalBeauty.com to see what other people think of some of those big names and some NOT so big names!
Lay off the Hair Products
Avoid overusing styling products. Using too many lotions, creams, conditioners and the like can be just as destructive to the hair as using none. Hair-care products can build up over time, smothering your hair in a coating of oil and chemicals and irritating your scalp. Stick to a few reliable products and rotate them occasionally to keep them from building up.
Regular Hair Trims / Haircuts
If you want to prevent split ends from forming (and who doesn’t???), it’s important that you have your hair trimmed regularly. In the Clayton area, you can always visit us at ClaytonHairSalon.com in downtown Clayton NC! If you keep your hair short, you should have it cut every 6 to 8 weeks. If you have long hair or would like to grow your hair out, it’s still essential that you at least trim it up on a regular basis. There is quite a bit to learn when it comes to ways to properly maintain your hair. While there is a lot you are able do to help make it look better, there is also quite a bit that can be done that will damage your hair. Be sure to pay attention to all the tips provided, and you will love your new hair.
